An Afternoon Discovering Prambanan, Sewu Temple & Ratu Boko

Yogyakarta
culturalexploratory
Depart : 13:00 / Return : 19:30

This afternoon we will take you to visit the 9th century Hindu temple compound of Prambanan, Sewu Temple & Ratu Boko. We will also enjoy a memorable sunset picnic while enjoying some of the best views across the Yogyakarta regency.

Our first port of call is Prambanan. This impressive collection of temples was built when Java was ruled by the Hindu Sanjayas of the Old Mataram. It consists of three major temples and shrines dedicated to the Trimurti, a concept of Hinduism whereby Brahma is the Creator, Vishnu is the Preserver, and Shiva is the Destroyer which is often referred to as the 'Great Trinity' or 'Hindu Triad'.

There were once 240 temples standing in this Shivaite temple complex, either big or small. The Prambanan temple complex consists of three zones; first the outer zone. The second is the middle zone, which contains hundreds of small temples, and the third is the holiest inner zone, which includes eight main temples and eight small shrines. Today, all eight main temples and eight small shrines in the inner zone are reconstructed, but only 3 out of the original 224 pervara temples are renovated.

Close by to Prambanan is the Sewu temple, an eighth-century Mahayana Buddhist temple. A private buggy car will be ready for the short transfer to the temple, where you will enjoy an escorted tour with your guide.

The Sewu temple complex is the largest Buddhist compound in the Prambanan area, with rectangular grounds that measure 185 meters north-south and 165 meters east-west. There is an entrance on all four cardinal points, but the main entrance is located on the east side. Each of the entrances is guarded by twin Dvarapala statues. These giant guardian statues have been better preserved, and replicas can be found at Jogja Kraton.

Your trip will continue to catch the sunset at Ratu Boko archaeological site. The original name of this site is still unclear. However, the local inhabitants named this site after King Boko, the legendary king mentioned in Roro Jonggrang folklore. In Javanese, Ratu Boko means "Stork King".

This former royal palace is situated on a plateau 196 metres above sea level. It is noted for its fine views of the temples at Prambanan and Mount Merapi, the most active volcano in Indonesia. Here you can enjoy a picnic of light snacks & refreshments prepared by your guide as you watch the sunset over Prambanan & Mount Merapi.

Travel Designer Insights

Most people focus on Borobudur & Prambanan when visiting Yogyakarta. Sewu Temple & Ratu Boko are often ignored. Visiting all four sites enables you to have a deeper understanding of Java’s colour past. How the various kingdoms and beliefs of its people helped shape both Java and Indonesia into the country, it is today. The views from Ratu Boko are also stunning and are one of our favourite sunset spots in Indonesia.
