Tokyo Bar Hopping

Experience Tokyo’s thriving cocktail scene with our local expert

unusual
Depart : 1730 / Return : 1930

Tokyo’s cocktail scene is unlike anywhere else in the world. Bars are small, often only as big as your living room, making it a social experience as you sit elbow to elbow at the counter with your fellow imbibers.

The bartending itself is an art form, and one in which the Japanese take very seriously. They study their craft, and practice each cocktail extensively until they can make it perfectly every time.

Tokyo has an astounding 30,000 bars - over 10 times more than NYC or London. However finding a bar can be intimidating - many bars are on upper floors of tall buildings, or hidden behind unmarked doors at ground level. For this reason, having a local take you around is essential, and we have arranged the very best person possible to show you Tokyo at night.

The British Author and longtime Tokyo resident Nick Coldicott first started as a writer at the English language newspaper The Japan Times, and has since gone on to work as editor of Whisky Magazine Japan and Eat magazine. He’s also a judge for the World Whisky Awards, a writer of guidebooks for Wallpaper* and Time Out and Academy Chair for the World’s 50 Best Bars list. On top of this, he has also published his own book - Tokyo Cocktails is an elegant collection of over 100 recipes inspired by the his time in the city.

Nick has amazing connections with bars and bartenders throughout Tokyo, and is able to get into bars that are usually for regulars only. Tonight, he will take you to two bars. The bars will vary, depending on the location of your hotel, what you like to drink, and whatever Chris’ favorite bar is at the time.

Some of the bars you visit may not have any menu - simply tell the bartender what your favorite spirit, flavor or fruit is and they will be able to create an original cocktail on the spot just for you.

Chris will also be able to give you the lowdown on the Japanese drinking culture, as well as his experiences living as a Brit in Tokyo.

The start time can be adjusted to suit, whether it is pre-drinks before dinner, or as a night cap after dinner. Chris of course will be able to assist you with any additional plans if you want to continue your night after the experience ends.

Travel Designer Insights

One of the best ways to truly get to know a new destination is to experience its nightlife. This is where you can experience how the locals relax after a day at work, what they do for fun and have a chance to interact.

Due to the language barrier and the private nature of Tokyo’s drinking scene, it can be a challenge to find the right place on your own. We are very privileged to be working with Chris, who is without a doubt the very best person in Japan to go bar hopping with.

From the moment you walk in to a bar with Chris, you stop being a tourist and become just another patron looking for an amazing cocktail. Enjoy your night!
